Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu has reportedly agreed to join Indian side Malappuram FC.
The 33-year-old is currently a free agent after parting ways with AmaZulu, bringing an underwhelming return to the PSL to an end.
According to SABC Sport, Zungu has agreed terms with Malappuram FC and is expected to complete the move once the final formalities are concluded in the coming days.
“The 33-year-old midfielder is expected to complete his move to the Super League Kerala club once the final formalities are concluded in the coming days, opening the door to another foreign adventure after his departure from AmaZulu in May,” the publication reported.
Zungu returned to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2023 after spending several years abroad, but his second spell at Chloorkop lasted just two seasons. He subsequently joined AmaZulu, although his time at Usuthu failed to revive his career.
The midfielder initially made his name at Sundowns before moving to Europe in 2016. He played for Vitória Guimarães in Portugal, Amiens in France and Scottish giants Rangers.
His time at Rangers produced some memorable performances, but disciplinary issues eventually contributed to the end of his stay at the club.
Despite his considerable talent and experience, Zungu has struggled to reproduce his best form since returning to South Africa. His second stint at Sundowns failed to reach the heights expected, while his time at AmaZulu was similarly disappointing.

A return to the Bafana Bafana setup also appears increasingly unlikely. Zungu has missed out on selection for the last three major tournaments, and at 33, his international career looks to be nearing its conclusion.
A move to India could now give the former Bafana midfielder an opportunity to enjoy another overseas adventure before potentially bringing the curtain down on his playing career.
