According to Ghanaian broadcast journalist Eben K, Asante Kotoko are set to appoint the experienced South African as their new head coach ahead of the new season. The move would see Tinkler return to continental football with one of Africa’s most successful clubs.
The 54-year-old has been without a club since leaving Sekhukhune United in April 2026 after a 13-month spell. During his time at Babina Noko, he guided the side into the race for a top-three finish in the Betway Premiership and also led them deep into domestic cup competitions.
ERIC TINKLER TO ASANTE KOTOKO
The reported appointment comes as Asante Kotoko look to revive their fortunes after enduring inconsistent seasons despite their rich history and massive support across Ghana.
“Asante Kotoko are set to appoint South African coach Eric Tinkler as the club’s new head coach. Eric Tinkler previously managed Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, and Sekhukhune United,” Ghanian broadcaster Eben K reported.
The Bafana Bafana legend’s coaching journey began as Roger de Sa’s assistant at Wits University before he stepped into the spotlight at Orlando Pirates.
He first took charge as caretaker coach in late 2013 following De Sa’s departure before earning the role permanently in 2015. During his spell with the Buccaneers, he guided the Soweto giants to the finals of both the CAF Confederation Cup and the Nedbank Cup, cementing his reputation as a coach who thrives under pressure.
His impressive work at Pirates earned him the opportunity to become the first-ever head coach of Cape Town City following the club’s formation in 2016.
TROPHY-WINNING RECORD
Tinkler enjoyed immediate success by leading Cape Town City to the Telkom Knockout title in their debut season before moving to SuperSport United in 2017, where he lifted the MTN8 trophy.
He later coached Chippa United and Maritzburg United, helping the latter complete a remarkable escape from relegation.
Tinkler returned to Cape Town City in 2021 for a second spell that lasted more than three years. During that period, he consistently guided the club to top-five finishes before both parties agreed to part ways in December 2024.
He returned to management with Sekhukhune United in early 2025 before leaving the Limpopo outfit in April this year.
