Orlando Pirates legend Moeneeb Josephs has launched a scathing attack on the Buccaneers following their shock elimination from the Nedbank Cup at the hands of Casric Stars.
Pirates were knocked out after a goalless 120 minutes ended in a penalty shootout defeat this past weekend.
The loss came just days after a 2-1 league defeat to reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, raising fresh concerns about the team’s mentality ahead of a crucial phase of the season.
Speaking on Soccer Beat, the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper accused the players of complacency and questioned their commitment.
“The coach has been complaining about players clowning around at training, and I saw that on the field today,” Josephs said.
“He must select players who want to win and who want to play for the badge. It doesn’t matter who you’re facing that so-called small team is motivated and wants to beat you.”
Moeneeb criticised Pirates’ failure to convert possession into goals, arguing that their dominance on the ball meant little without cutting edge.
“They’re not worried about you making 400 or 500 passes in front of them. If you don’t take your chances, it works in their favour and that’s exactly what happened. We are complacent.”
Moeneeb sends Pirates Derby warning
The former shot-stopper warned that the Buccaneers could be in serious trouble ahead of their blockbuster Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs this weekend.
“We have a massive game coming up on Saturday. Do you think the Chiefs players are sitting there nervous about this team? No, I’m hurt and embarrassed. This is not the brand of Orlando Pirates that I know,” Moeneeb added.
Josephs stressed that a mental reset is urgently needed, from the technical team down to the playing squad.
“It shows our mentality isn’t right. From the coach all the way down to the players, they need to look in the mirror and ask themselves what needs to change. We must solve this issue before the derby.”
