Five Bafana Bafana stars playing in their last FIFA World Cup

Bafana Bafana’s current squad is entering its prime years, but several senior players are unlikely to still be part of the national team by the time the 2030 FIFA World Cup comes around.

South Africa’s current squad has an average age of around 28 and has largely remained together over the past three years.

While that continuity has helped Bafana qualify for major tournaments, the next World Cup cycle is expected to bring significant changes.

The likes of Relebohile Mofokeng, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Ime Okon are all under the age of 22 and could remain key figures for the national team for the next decade.

Some of Bafana’s experienced stars however, are unlikely to feature at the 2030 FIFA World Cup should South Africa qualify.

Themba Zwane

Themba “Mshishi” Zwane may have already played his final World Cup match.

The 36-year-old’s tournament ended in unfortunate fashion after he was sent off less than 15 minutes into South Africa’s opening match against Mexico.

By the time the 2030 World Cup arrives, Zwane will be 40 and is expected to have retired from international football.

Ronwen Williams

At 34, Ronwen Williams remains Bafana’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper and captain.

While goalkeepers often enjoy longer careers than outfield players, Williams will be 38 at the next World Cup.

Although he continues to perform at a high level, age and the emergence of younger goalkeepers could make this his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Ricardo Goss

Ricardo Goss is currently 32 and serves as South Africa’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Williams and Sipho Chaine.

The former SuperSport United shot-stopper enjoyed a solid season with Siwelele FC, but he faces stiff competition from a new generation of goalkeepers. By 2030, Bafana could have several younger options ahead of him in the pecking order.

Aubrey Modiba

Aubrey Modiba will soon turn 32 and may find it difficult to hold onto his place over the next four years.

The left-back position demands pace, stamina and constant movement, attributes that become harder to maintain as players get older. Promising defenders such as Bradley Cross and Samukele Kabini are among those expected to challenge for a regular place in the coming years.

Iqraam Rayners

Iqraam Rayners is another player who could struggle to make the next World Cup squad.

The Mamelodi Sundowns forward is currently 31 and would be approaching 35 by the time the 2030 tournament begins. With South Africa expected to introduce younger attacking options over the next cycle, Rayners may find opportunities increasingly limited despite his experience at international level.

Bafana need to prepare for next World Cuo cycle

While several experienced players could be nearing the end of their international careers, Bafana’s future appears bright.

With exciting young talents such as Relebohile Mofokeng, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Ime Okon already making their mark, South Africa will hope to build a squad capable of competing not only at the 2030 World Cup but for many years beyond.

Which other players will miss 2030?
