Heading into the final matchday of Group A at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Bafana Bafana will know that they need to put it all on the line in hunting for a victory if they hope to progress to the next stage of the tournament for the first time in history.
After an important draw against Czechia, Bafana Bafana have kept their hopes alive of progressing to the knockout stage, but it isn’t going to be easy.
With Mexico already qualified, South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia are fighting for the remaining spots.
Current Group A Standings as Bafana Bafana chasing qualification
| Team | Played | Points | Goal Difference | Status |
| Mexico | 2 | 6 | +2 (approx) | Qualified |
| South Korea | 2 | 3 | 0 (approx) | In the hunt |
| Czech Republic | 2 | 1 | -1 (approx) | In the hunt |
| South Africa | 2 | 1 | -1 (approx) | In the hunt |
Note: The top two teams automatically advance to the Round of 32, along with the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups.
The Permutations
The overall equation for Hugo Broos’ side is simple: They need to beat South Korea in Monterrey. Anything less will almost certainly result in elimination.
If South Africa secures the win, they will finish on four points, and their ultimate path depends on the simultaneous match between Mexico and Czechia:
1. Automatic Qualification (second place)
South Africa will secure automatic, guaranteed qualification to the Round of 32 if:
- Bafana Bafana beat South Korea AND
- Czech Republic draws or loses against Mexico
This scenario would leapfrog South Africa over South Korea into a clear second place with four points.
2. The goal difference shootout (second or third place)
If Bafana Bafana beat South Korea AND Czech Republic pulls off an upset against Mexico:
- Both South Africa and Czechia will finish tied on four points.
- Final placement (second vs. third) will be decided by FIFA’s tiebreakers (overall goal difference, then goals scored).
- If South Africa wins the tiebreaker: They finish second and qualify automatically.
- If Czechia wins the tiebreaker: South Africa finishes third. However, finishing third with four points provides a high probability of advancing as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
3. If Bafana Bafana Draw or Lose
- A loss: Complete elimination from the tournament.
- A draw: South Africa finishes on two points. They would be eliminated if Czechia gets a result, or left stranded with two points in third place, which is mathematically insufficient to qualify among the best third-placed teams.
The Numbers Game
With 12 groups, there are 12 third-placed teams competing for eight knockout spots. Only four teams will be cut. Looking at the current global tournament landscape, multiple groups already have third-placed teams sitting on three points or two points with only two games played. By the time Matchday 3 finishes, the cutoff line for the “8 best” is expected to be at least three points, if not four.
