Mamelodi Sundowns are set to earn at least R51.2 million through FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme following the release of their players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Brazilians have eight players in the final 26-man Bafana Bafana squad, making them one of the biggest beneficiaries of the tournament alongside rivals Orlando Pirates.

Pirates also have eight players in Hugo Broos’ squad and are expected to receive a similar payout of at least R51.2 million.

FIFA compensates clubs for every player released to participate in the World Cup, with payments calculated on a daily basis from the start of the official preparation period on 25 May until a team’s elimination from the competition.

Sundowns and Pirates to both get R51.2 million

The minimum payout for both Sundowns and Pirates could increase significantly should Bafana Bafana progress beyond the group stage.

South Africa have been drawn in a challenging group alongside Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea.

Sundowns have already enjoyed a lucrative campaign, reportedly earning more than R100 million after winning the CAF Champions League last month.

Pirates, meanwhile, banked over R40 million after completing a historic domestic treble this season.

Bafana Bafana begin their World Cup campaign against Mexico on Thursday, with a positive result likely to boost their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

After the Mexico match, Bafana will then face Czech Republic before their last group match with South Korea on 25 June.

Should Hugo Broos’ men progress to the next round, they will earn close to R182 million, meaning more money for Sundowns and Pirates.

Will the money boost Bucs and Downs CAF chances?
