Kaizer Chiefs stand to pocket the cash thanks to their hard-tackling left-back Cross.

The Amakhosi defender is the club’s sole representative at the tournament, making Amakhosi eligible for compensation through .

HOW WILL KAIZER CHIEFS EARN THE MONEY?

FIFA compensates clubs for every player released to compete at the World Cup. The payments calculated from the start of the official preparation period on 25 May until a team’s elimination.

South Africa guaranteed to remain in the tournament until at least their final Group A fixture against South Korea on 25 June. Cross is expected to generate approximately R6.4 million for Kaizer Chiefs.

The figure could increase if Bafana Bafana progress to the knockout stages.

Cross came through the youth ranks at Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bidvest Wits before continuing his development overseas.

The 25-year-old left-back spent time in the academies of German club Schalke 04. He moved to the U23 team of English side Newcastle United before returning to South Africa in 2023.

After impressing during spells with Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows, Cross secured a move to Amakhosi ahead of the 2024/25 season. His strong performances at club level were later rewarded with a senior Bafana Bafana debut in 2026.

WHY IS THE PAYOUT IMPORTANT?

The compensation programme rewards clubs for developing and releasing players for international duty. It provides an additional revenue stream outside traditional prize money and sponsorship income.

While Kaizer Chiefs have just one representative at the tournament, the payout still represents a significant financial benefit for the Soweto giants.

KAIZER CHIEFS GOALKEEPER BRANDON PETERSEN

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos raised eyebrows when he left Amakhosi goalkeeper Brandon Petersen out of South Africa’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Many supporters and pundits believed Petersen had done enough to earn selection after an impressive campaign. He delivered 15 clean sheets and help Amakhosi secure a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership.

Broos, however, insisted the decision was not based purely on footballing ability. The Belgian coach explained that Petersen’s limited time in the national team environment made it difficult to assess how he would fit into the group dynamic, particularly if he was required to play a backup role throughout the tournament.
