Bafana Bafana have suffered a setback ahead of their historic FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 encounter against Canada after FIFA’s disciplinary committee dismissed SAFA’s appeal against Themba Zwane’s three-match suspension.
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was sanctioned following the red card he received during South Africa’s opening Group A match against tournament co-hosts Mexico.
‘Disappointed’
SAFA expressed its disappointment at the outcome, arguing that the punishment did not fit the offence.
“We are disappointed with the outcome of our appeal because we strongly believe that the punishment is far harsher than the offense that Themba is said to have committed,” the association said in a statement.
The decision means Zwane will remain unavailable for Bafana Bafana’s Round of 32 showdown against Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, 28 June.
It will be the final match of his suspension, making him eligible again should South Africa advance to the Last 16.
Some positive news
There is some positive news for coach Hugo Broos, however, with midfielder Teboho Mokoena returning to contention after serving a one-match ban during Bafana Bafana’s crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea.
South Africa secured a place in the knockout stages for the first time in the country’s World Cup history after progressing from Group A behind winners Mexico.
The squad is scheduled to return to its base camp in Pachuca before travelling to Los Angeles for the highly anticipated clash against Canada, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
