Ex-Bafana Coach – This Striker Should Start Vs Korea

Former Bafana Bafana interim coach Owen Da Gama has made a bold statement regarding Hugo Broos’ strikers after South Africa’s opening two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana have had a tough start to their global showpiece campaign, losing to Mexico before fighting back to earn a draw against the Czech Republic.

They face a crucial third group-stage match on Thursday against South Korea, where they will hope to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.

Speaking on the team’s recent struggles upfront, Da Gama noted that Bafana have lacked a truly “prolific” number nine.

However, he maintained that all the strikers Broos selected – Iqraam Rayners, Lyle Foster, and Evidence Makgopa – have given their absolute best on the pitch.

“I think if you look at Sundowns, when they play, even in the Champions League, they have Leon, international striker playing there,” said Da Gama in the interview with Radio 2000.

“Iqraam was an impact player at Sundowns but he has done very well for them.

“I still believe we still haven’t that prolific striker, I think the coach has tried his best. I think Makgopa has done well, Rayners has given his best, Lyle Foster has given his best.

“But I don’t think we have hit the right notes there so far. Hopefully, in the next match, we can show more composure and also a better supply for the strikers.

“There was a number of long balls against Mexico and Rayners gave his best. But there was no clear-cut chances where he could score.”

Who Should Start Vs South Korea

Da Gama hopes to see Makgopa named in the starting lineup for Thursday’s crucial World Cup clash against South Korea, citing the striker’s height.

“I’m hoping [next game], they can play Makgopa because of his height. I’ve always spoken about combinations of players from the same club like Sundowns and Pirates.”
