D-Day has arrived for Orlando Pirates

Everything will be on the line for Orlando Pirates in their final Betway Premiership fixture of the 2025/26 season as they conclude their campaign with an all-or-nothing clash against Orbit College at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, 23 May.

The 2010 World Cup venue in Mpumalanga is once again the site of a make-or-break assignment for the Buccaneers as they visit a side with just as urgent a need for points.

The Mswenko Boys are meanwhile more than just potential disruptors to their visitors’ title ambitions, but have a mission that is just as significant with their immediate future as a top-flight outfit hanging in the balance.

The intriguing match-up will decide the destination of the Betway Premiership title while also having a say in the feisty scrap for survival lower down the table.

It is the undeniable headline act of the final round of fixtures, bringing the curtain down on what has been one of the most captivating league battles in recent years.

Latest Betway Premiership log

Threat of relegation

The threat of relegation has hovered above Orbit College for the best part of their debut season in the top flight, where they have spent all but one game week in the bottom half of the table.

Currently in 15th place, they welcome Orlando Pirates with the aim of avoiding the relegation playoffs while the possibility of automatically dropping down to the National First Division (NFD) is also still a possibility.

All of that heightens the significance of a positive result on Saturday, with the hosts desperately needing to return to winning ways following defeat away to Stellenbosch in their previous fixture.

The outcome of their trip to the Cape ended their longest unbeaten run in the league which yielded just five points in three games through stalemates against Durban City and AmaZulu, as well as a potentially season-defining win away to fellow relegation candidates Magesi.

The latter result brought them up from the basement of the table, and was only their sixth victory overall in a season where they have only amassed 24 league points.

Half those points have been collected on home turf, but they remain the side with the slimmest returns as hosts after only managing to beat three of the 14 teams that have visited their ends.

They take their final home game to Mbombela, where they will be bolstered by the return of midfielder Realeboga Potsana who is back from serving a one-match suspension.

Orbit College will also have a few absentees heading into the match with fullback Yanga Madiba and attacking midfielder Thuso Moleleki both unavailable.

Bucs Team News

Three points are simply a non-negotiable for Orlando Pirates as they look to end the season with their third bit of silverware, having already picked up two of the three domestic trophies on offer.

Their marathon race towards Betway Premiership glory sees them just two points off the summit heading into the final leg with only a win against Orbit College enough to secure the title.

They missed an opportunity in their previous fixture where they played to a goalless stalemate at home against Durban City when victory would have propelled them to the top of the standings.

It was a far-from ideal way to maintain a still-impressive 12-match league unbeaten streak stretching back to late February.

During this run of results, the Buccaneers have collected maximum points on eight occasions to keep up with the pace in what has been a frantic title chase.

They could be first to the finish line by extending their winning streak away from home to three matches after collecting wins on their visits to Stellenbosch and Magesi.

Those recent results have seen them emerge head and shoulders above the rest as the league’s best travellers with 10 wins and only a single defeat in their 14 games on the road.

They now stand to embark on what is perhaps their most crucial journey yet as they look to complete another treble 14 years since they last achieved the feat.

Head-to-Head

The ongoing season has provided a few historical moments, including the very first competitive meeting between Orlando Pirates and Orbit College which took place at Orlando Amstel Arena back in August last year.

That particular match finished with the Buccaneers getting their league campaign up and running through a slim 1-0 win with defender Lebone Seema’s stunning 56th minute strike proving to be the difference on the night.

It’s now a full-circle moment as a three-pointer against the same opposition on Saturday holds all the cards for Abdeslam Ouaddou’s troops in their bid to add another defining chapter in the club’s record books.

TV Coverage and Ticket Info

The game is scheduled to kick off at 15:00 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL and SABC 1.

Tickets to attend the match are sold out, and none will be available for purchase at the match venue.
