Kaizer Chiefs legend Tsepo Masilela has questioned the tactical approach of Amakhosi’s co-coaches following their 1-1 draw with Orlando Pirates.

The Glamour Boys secured a point at the FNB Stadium after adopting a largely defensive strategy against their bitter rivals.

Still smarting from a heavy 3-0 defeat in February, Chiefs opted for a more cautious setup in the return fixture, deploying two defensive midfielders.

While co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze earned praise from some supporters for prioritising stability, Masilela believes the approach ultimately highlighted the gap between the two sides.

“It shows that the gap between the two is huge. We are playing for a draw,” Masilela said on Soccerbeat.

“My question is, is it sustainable? Can we go into next season with the same coach and the same squad and compete for the league?

“I don’t think that can happen because the approach alone shows the gap, being scared of Pirates and being afraid of losing.”

Chiefs hold Pirates to a draw but…

The former Bafana Bafana left-back also felt Chiefs missed an opportunity to be more aggressive, suggesting that attackers Mduduzi Shabalala and Flavio Silva should have started.

“When you looked at the team sheet, it told you everything, we were playing not to lose. How do you bench players like Flavio and Mdu? Those guys are a real threat going forward,” he added.

Interestingly, Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that a club of Chiefs’ stature should not be satisfied with playing for a draw.

Did Amakhosi come for a draw?
