Chiefs Go Top Of Their Group

Kaizer Chiefs have gone to the top of their CAF Confederation Cup group after being Al Masry 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Flavio Silva converted a contentious penalty in the 34th minute while Aden McCarthy scored in the second half to help Amakhosi move to the summit of group D with 10 points from five matches, two points from second placed Zamalek who they wrap up their group stage campaign against next week.

Meanwhile Al Masry dropped to third place in the group with seven points from the same number of games.

There weren’t as many goal-scoring opportunities created by both sides in the opening 30 minutes. After the goal the visitors almost equalised through Salah Shalabi but his shot was a comfortable save for the Chiefs captain.

The hosts missed two opportunities to double the lead before halftime through Mduduzi Shabalala who had his shot saved and Silva who side netted after eliminating defenders and the goalie.

There were no immediate changes from both sides at the start of the second stanza. It was 11 minutes in the half that Al Masry found the equaliser through Abderrarhim Deghmoum, having capitalised from a Given Msimango mistake.

The celebrations didn’t last long as Chiefs won a set-piece two minutes later and McCarthy scored to regain the lead two.

Shabalala had an opportunity to make it 3-1 three minutes after the hour but his shot was deflected for a corner. Pule Mmodi also missed a chance to score with 10 minutes to go shooting over the bar.

Meanwhile, Zamalek lost to ZESCO United, and remained on eight points from five games, while the Zambian side picked up their first win of the group stages.
