Kaizer Chiefs co-head coach Khalil Ben Youssef has taken a subtle dig at rivals Orlando Pirates over what he believes is an uneven fixture schedule in the Betway Premiership.
The Tunisian tactician voiced his frustration after Amakhosi were forced to navigate a congested run of fixtures, playing seven matches in the space of just three weeks, while the Buccaneers featured in only four games during the same period despite not being involved in CAF competitions.
Chiefs, who are competing in the CAF Confederation Cup, are on the brink of qualifying for the quarter-finals but still face a demanding trip to Egypt this weekend to take on Zamalek.
Ben Youssef believes the heavy schedule has placed his side at a clear disadvantage.
“We have the same problem [fixture congestion]. The team has played about five games in a row,” the Chiefs coach said.
“We are flying back today and flying out tomorrow for another match. There is no time to prepare for games or even to train properly. Our players have gone two to three weeks without a single proper training session.”
Ben Youssef explained that the relentless match cycle has made it almost impossible to implement tactical work or manage player fatigue effectively.
“You play today, tomorrow is recovery, and on matchday minus one you cannot do anything. Even when you try to prepare, you must always think about the condition of the players,” he added.

Ben Youssef also questioned why adjustments were not made to assist teams representing South Africa in continental competitions, pointing to precedents from previous seasons.
“We are playing in CAF competitions and have still completed all our PSL matches. Last season, teams involved in the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup had their league fixtures adjusted. Some of their remaining matches were played in May,” he said.
The Chiefs coach went on to suggest that his side should be given fewer domestic fixtures while competing on the continent, before making a pointed reference to a rival club.
“This season we have played 15 games. Another team, I don’t want to mention names has also played 13 games and they don’t play nothing [CAF competition],” Ben Youssef said.
“If we are representing Kaizer Chiefs, then say so. But if we are representing South Africa, then tell us that as well.”
Amakhosi will now turn their focus to the crucial Confederation Cup clash against Zamalek, as they look to balance their continental ambitions with an increasingly demanding domestic schedule.
