Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has opened up about why the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup holds a deeply personal significance for him.
The 74-year-old will lead the South African charges at the global showpiece, which is set to be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Broos secured qualification for South Africa last year, sealing the country’s return to the tournament after a 16-year absence, having last participated when they hosted the event in 2010.
The veteran tactician admitted that the opening match against Mexico will be particularly special.
It serves as a full-circle moment, mirroring the 1986 World Cup where he faced the exact same opponents at Estadio Azteca stadium – the same venue where Bafana will play the opener.
Broos, who represented Belgium as a player during that 1986 tournament, started in their opening match against the Mexican hosts, a fixture they ultimately lost 2-1.
“Yeah, I think first of all going into the World Cup is for, everybody, exciting,” said Broos during interview with Sporty TV.
“It’s the highest level, the biggest event in football. So, you have to be motivated and excited, that’s the first thing.
“Secondly, for me it’s a little bit special because 40 years ago, I was also here with Belgium as a player.
“And we played also the opening game against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. So, it’s amazing that, that happens. So, for me it’s special.”
