Broos – The Future Is Secure For Bafana Duo
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Reddit

Hugo Broos has declared the future of Bafana Bafana‘s central defence in safe hands, heaping praise on the emerging partnership between Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Ime Okon as two of South African football’s brightest defensive prospects.

The veteran Belgian coach has been watching Mbokazi’s development closely, and his verdict is glowing. Broos believes the defender has grown into a different player over the past twelve months – more composed, more commanding, and increasingly ready for a bigger stage.

“Mbokazi is a very good player, he is young and has made progression, when I see him now and compared to one year ago, I think he’s become better and better,” Broos said.

“I really hope for him in the next months or year that he should go to a bigger competition where he’s more challenged.”

For Broos, the ceiling on Mbokazi’s development is still some way off. He sees not just a reliable centre-back, but the makings of a leader capable of marshalling those around him.

“He can become better than he is now — he’s not only a good player, he’s also a leader, certainly,” the coach added.

“So I expect much from him and to have a fantastic career. Strong, quick, good in passing, a very good defender — and with Okon next to him? Two young players. The future of Bafana Bafana central defence is secure.”

It is that partnership, Mbokazi alongside Okon — that appears to excite Broos most. The combination of two young, mobile, ball-playing defenders offers the kind of foundation coaches dream of building around, and Broos clearly sees the pair growing into long-term fixtures in the heart of the national team’s back line.

Okon excited by Mbokazi partnership

Okon himself echoed those sentiments, speaking to the value of time on the training pitch and the natural understanding that develops from it.

“We work together in training; the more we are together in training, the more we understand each other,” Okon said.

“But it’s not only us. It’s the whole defence, the guys in front of us, our skipper behind us, you know. The more training we get together, the more understanding there is amongst one another – so it works good.”

His words reflect a maturity beyond his years. Okon is not just talking about a two-man partnership; he is describing an entire defensive structure built on collective trust and communication, with him and Mbokazi at its core.

For Bafana Bafana supporters, Broos’ confidence will come as welcome reassurance. South African football has long searched for reliable, consistent centre-back pairings at international level, and the emergence of this combination offers genuine optimism.
