South African clubs with players at FIFA World Cup 2026 are set for a massive financial boost, with FIFA paying compensation running into millions of rands during the tournament.
Under FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme, clubs are compensated for releasing players to national teams for the World Cup.
Payments range between approximately $12 000 and $15 000 (around R215 000 to R270 000) per player, per day, from the start of national team camps until the country is eliminated from the tournament.
Financial rewards could climb higher
At the highest rate, a single Bafana Bafana player could earn his club roughly R6.5 million – even if South Africa exits in the group stage.
Should Hugo Broos’ side advance deeper into the tournament, the financial rewards would climb significantly.
The biggest beneficiaries among Premier Soccer League clubs are Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, who each have eight players involved in the World Cup.
With eight representatives apiece, those two clubs could potentially pocket more than R50 million in FIFA compensation.
Benefit substantially
However, the financial impact stretches far beyond South Africa’s traditional heavyweights.
Smaller clubs such as Polokwane City or Siwelele FC stand to benefit substantially from even a single player’s involvement.
While the Buccaneers and Brazilians have eight players each, no other club has more than one representative.
The 10 non-Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns players come from Kaizer Chiefs, Siwelele, Molde, Philadelphia Union, Polokwane City, Chicago Fire, Hannover 96, Tondela, Burnley and AEL Limassol.
Each of those teams will receive the same $6.5 million – or the dollar / pound / euro equivalent.
