Bafana soar six places in FIFA rankings after historic World Cup breakthrough

Bafana Bafana have climbed six places in the FIFA World Rankings following their impressive victory over South Korea on Thursday morning.

A solitary goal from Thapelo Maseko secured a 1-0 win for South Africa, ensuring they finished second in Group A and advanced to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.

After a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match, Hugo Broos’ side bounced back with a crucial draw against the Czech Republic to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Against South Korea, Bafana knew only a victory would guarantee progression. Maseko delivered in the 63rd minute, scoring the decisive goal that sent South Africa into the Round of 32.

The victory has boosted Bafana’s standing in the live FIFA World Rankings, with Bafana now occupying 54th place.

It marks the highest ranking South Africa have achieved in more than a decade, and they could break into the world’s top 50 if they overcome Canada in Sunday’s Round of 32 clash.

With the South Korea victory now behind them, attention turns to Canada, where another win would see Bafana record two victories at a single World Cup for the first time.

Bafana are 54th in the FIFA rankings

South Africa have faced Canada only once before, back in 2007, when Teko Modise scored twice in a convincing victory. However, Sunday’s encounter is expected to be a much tougher challenge against a stronger Canadian side backed by a large home crowd.

Bafana Bafana and Canada will meet on Sunday evening in the United States, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00.

How good has Bafana been?
