BafanBafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup campaign has suffered a major setback after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off during South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their tournament opener.
The consequences of those dismissals have now been confirmed. With dire consequences for Zwane.
SITHOLE SUSPENDED FOR ONE MATCH
Sithole has been handed a one-match suspension following his red card against Mexico.
The midfielder will therefore miss South Africa’s crucial Group A clash against Czechia on Thursday, before becoming available again for the final group-stage encounter against South Korea.
His absence is expected to open the door for in-form Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha, who is likely to step into the starting line-up.

ZWANE’S FIFA WORLD CUP NIGHTMARE DEEPENS
For Zwane, the situation is far more severe.
The veteran playmaker began the match on the bench and lasted only a matter of minutes after coming on before receiving his marching orders. What was already a frustrating evening has now turned into a devastating blow.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has imposed a three-match suspension on the Mamelodi Sundowns star.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on South Africa’s player Themba Zwane, who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Mexico and South Africa played at Mexico City Stadium on 11 June 2026: three-match suspension for breach under article 14 paragraph 1(e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code,” read a statement.
Meaning, his FIFA World Cup dream is likely over unless Bafana Bafana can do the unthinkable and somehow find a way to progress further in the competition.
ZWANE’S FATE NOW DEPENDS ON BAFANA BAFANA
The suspension rules Zwane out of South Africa’s remaining group matches.
Additionally, if Bafana Bafana reach the next round, he would miss that next match too.
That alone represents a significant loss for head coach Hugo Broos, who will be without one of his most experienced and creative players during the team’s fight for survival.
More concerning, however, is that Zwane may never kick another ball at this World Cup.
As mentioned, for him to feature again, Bafana Bafana must first qualify for the knockout stages and then win their Round of 32 encounter. Only then would he become eligible for selection again.
In other words, his World Cup future is no longer in his own hands.
CAN BAFANA BAFANA KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE?
After losing to 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico, South Africa have left themselves with little margin for error.
The top two teams in each group automatically qualify for the Round of 32. Whilst, the eight best third-placed nations also progress.
Realistically, four points from the remaining two matches would give Bafana a strong chance of advancing.
The challenge, however, is immense. South Africa currently sits 61st in the latest FIFA World Rankings. Czechia are ranked 44th. South Korea occupy 22nd place.
Broos’ men will therefore need to upset higher-ranked opposition to keep their campaign alive. Should they fail, Zwane’s World Cup journey will end almost as soon as it began.
For now, the veteran midfielder can only watch and hope that his teammates can produce the performances needed to extend both South Africa’s tournament and his final World Cup dream.
