Pitso Mosimane looks increasingly likely to return to the Bafana Bafana dugout after reports claimed he has become SAFA’s number-one choice to succeed Hugo Broos following South Africa’s memorable 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Sportswire reports that Mosimane is the preferred candidate, with plans already being discussed to appoint Manqoba Mngqithi as his assistant should the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach accept the role.
There is also a possibility that current assistant coach Helman Mkhalele could remain in the national team setup, with the former winger represented by Mosimane’s wife and agent, Moira Tlhagale.

Broos has repeatedly stated that he intends to step away from coaching after the World Cup, although he recently hinted he could still remain involved in South African football in another capacity.
His five-year contract as South Africa head coach has now come to an end, prompting SAFA to begin the search for a new man to lead the team into the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
The Belgian leaves behind an impressive legacy. Since taking charge in 2021, Broos transformed a struggling national side into one of Africa’s most competitive teams. He guided Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at AFCON 2023. He further qualified for AFCON 2025, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, for the first time in 24 years.
South Africa also made history in the United States by reaching the Round of 32 for the first time before their journey ended with a narrow defeat to Canada.
MANQOBA MNGQITHI COULD TIPPED TO JOIN PITSO MOSIMANE
SAFA are believed to have received more than 80 applications for the position. Mosimane has quickly moved to the front of the queue.
The 61-year-old remains one of Africa’s most successful coaches. He won three CAF Champions League titles with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, as well as several Betway Premiership championships.
He also guided Al Ahly to consecutive bronze medals at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Having previously coached South Africa between 2010 and 2012, Mosimane already understands the demands of the national team environment. His vast experience across South Africa, Egypt and the Gulf makes him a strong candidate.
If the move goes ahead, Mosimane would inherit one of the most exciting Bafana Bafana squads in recent years. The journey should in Septermber’s AFCON qualifyers.
