FIFA World Cup 2026 is around the corner. With it comes both hope and disappointment for Kaizer Chiefs players hoping to represent South Africa on football’s biggest stage.
Kaizer Chiefs did not have a single player included in Hugo Broos’s most recent 23-man squad for the back-to-back friendlies against Panama.
However, all hope is not lost just yet, with one Amakhosi star in particular making a strong case for selection in Bafana Bafana’s squad for the tournament starting next month.
KAIZER CHIEFS CAPTAIN PUTS HIS HAND UP FOR SELECTION
The good news for Amakhosi is that Brandon Petersen has produced a series of outstanding performances of late, prompting growing calls for him to be selected in Hugo Broos’s final squad for the FIFA World Cup.
Notably, Petersen was named man of the match against Orlando Pirates in the most recent Soweto derby, after almost single-handedly guiding Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw.
He produced several crucial saves under immense pressure in front of more than 90 000 supporters at the FNB Stadium.
Orlando Pirates had entered the clash as overwhelming favourites after securing a dominant 3-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs just weeks earlier.
Nevertheless, Petersen delivered a commanding display to frustrate the Buccaneers.
POTENTIALLY ‘LEAGUE-DEFINING’ SAVES
Thereafter, he arguably produced an even better performance against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Petersen’s dramatic 96th-minute save could yet prove decisive in the title race.
The Kaizer Chiefs captain inspired his side to a crucial 1-1 draw against the Brazilians at Loftus Versfeld.
Consequently, that result shifted the title momentum firmly towards Orlando Pirates.
Now, the Buccaneers stand on the verge of making history.
They are potentially just 90 minutes away from ending a 14-year wait to be crowned PSL champions and banking millions in prize money.
Petersen’s recent form follows Broos’s admission that he had ‘almost’ selected the goalkeeper for the squad against Panama.
However, injury concerns ultimately ruled him out of contention.
Therefore, the Amakhosi captain realistically represents Kaizer Chiefs’ strongest chance of having a player included in South Africa’s FIFA World Cup squad.

BAD NEWS FOR AMAKHOSI
Unfortunately for Kaizer Chiefs, the club remains unlikely to have any further representation at FIFA World Cup 2026.
While Petersen still has a realistic opportunity, he faces stiff competition from Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine who has enjoyed an exceptional season.
The Buccaneers shot-stopper has kept 20 clean sheets in 29 Betway Premiership matches, thus strengthening his claim for national selection.
As a result, Chaine is widely expected to join Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams as well as Ricardo Goss on the plane to the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Based on Broos’s recent selections and the current form of several Kaizer Chiefs players, the club appears unlikely to have additional representatives in Bafana Bafana’s final FIFA World Cup squad.
