The Bafana Bafana mentor came under intense scrutiny following South Africa’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match. Many supporters and pundits criticised his ultra-defensive approach and team selection.
Speaking before the encounter against Czechia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 18:00, Broos made it clear that he remains unmoved by the backlash and will continue to trust his own judgment.
BAFANA BAFANA COACH HUGO BROOS RESPONDS
The Belgian, who has coached professionally for nearly four decades, said criticism comes with the territory but dismissed much of what is said outside the dressing room.
“I have been a coach for nearly 40 years, and I know that being criticised is part of the job,” Broos told the media.
“So, at the moment, I am being criticised. But people have to know—for those who still don’t know it, I do it my way. I never listen to the trash on social media.
“I never listen to people who sometimes think they are important and feel they have to criticise the team.”
The veteran tactician then launched an even stronger defence of his methods, arguing that many of those questioning him have little to show for their own achievements in football.
“When I look at what they achieved before, I think it’s better that they shut up,” Broos fired back.
“Again, I know what went wrong. We had a thorough debrief after the game against Mexico. The players know it, and that is the most important thing.”
FOCUS SHIFTS TO CZECHIA CLASH
Broos also stressed that public opinion will not dictate his team selection as Bafana Bafana look to revive their campaign.
“For the rest of the time, I have been doing it my way. Tomorrow, the supporters will want this player, another one, or a third one. If I don’t agree, that player will not be in the team,” he added.
His comments come as South Africa prepare for a crucial showdown against Czechia, who are also under pressure after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Korea in their opening fixture.
With both nations still searching for their first points of the tournament, Thursday’s clash has become a do-or-die encounter in the race for qualification to the knockout stages.
Broos will now hope his side can respond on the pitch and silence some of the criticism that followed the defeat to Mexico.
