With Khuliso Mudau expected to miss the entire season, Mamelodi Sundowns could enter the race for Thabang Matuludi and potentially battle Orlando Pirates for the talented right-back.
Matuludi has been heavily linked with a move away from Polokwane City during this transfer window, with Pirates reportedly among the clubs interested in securing his services. However, it does not appear that the Buccaneers have made a formal offer for the defender yet.
That could quickly change if other top PSL clubs enter the race.
Mudau’s injury, suffered during Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday night, has left the club with a major void to fill. The Bafana Bafana right-back was stretchered off in the first half, with the injury reportedly serious enough to potentially rule him out for the season.
Sundowns and Pirates could fight for Matuludi
As a result, Sundowns could now look to the transfer market for a replacement capable of operating at the highest level.
Matuludi could be an ideal option. The Polokwane City defender has established himself as one of the most promising right-backs in the PSL and has also earned recognition at international level.
Sundowns, however, may have to fight Pirates for his signature. Matuludi could be tempted by a move to Chloorkop, particularly because Mudau’s injury could open the door for him to become the club’s first-choice right-back for a significant portion of the season.
At Pirates, the competition could be tougher, with Deon van Rooyen and Kamogelo Sebelebele also capable of playing in the position. Mike Mphasha’s ability to operate as an attacking player and on the right wing could also provide additional competition for places.
For Matuludi, regular playing time could therefore be an important factor when deciding his next move.
It remains to be seen whether the Bafana Bafana star will ultimately join Pirates, make the move to Sundowns, or remain with Polokwane City for another season.
Downs coach told SuperSport TV that Mudau could be out of action for a long time.
