Africa is home to some of the continent’s most passionate football fans, with historic clubs attracting millions of supporters both at stadiums and online.
Social media has become one of the clearest ways to gauge the digital reach of football clubs.
Based on the available social-media follower figures, these are the 10 African football clubs with the largest online fan bases in 2026.
The figures combine followers across platforms including Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube.
Egyptian giants Al Ahly have the largest social-media following among African football clubs, with more than 38 million followers across their major platforms.
Founded in 1907, the Cairo-based club is also one of the most successful teams in African football history, having won numerous domestic and continental honours, including multiple CAF Champions League titles.
Al Ahly’s fierce Cairo rivals, Zamalek, rank second with about 15.8 million social-media followers.
The club was founded in 1911 and has a long history of success in Egypt and Africa, including five CAF Champions League titles.
3. Simba SC – 14.2 million followers
Tanzanian giants Simba SC rank third with around 14.2 million followers.
The club has one of the biggest fan bases in East African football and has built a particularly strong presence on Instagram, where it has millions of followers.
4. Raja Club Athletic – 12.3 million followers
Morocco’s Raja Club Athletic is fourth with approximately 12 million followers.
The Casablanca giants boast a particularly passionate support base and have won three CAF Champions League titles. Their home matches at Stade Mohammed V are known for their impressive atmosphere.
South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs are the highest-ranked South African club, with approximately 7.2 million followers.
The Soweto giants have a huge following across Southern Africa and are among the country’s most recognisable football brands.
Another Soweto giant, Orlando Pirates, ranks sixth with about 8.8 million followers.
The Buccaneers have a long and successful history in South African football and have also won major continental honours.
Mamelodi Sundowns are another South African club in the top 10, with approximately 6 million followers.
The Pretoria-based side has enjoyed sustained domestic success and won the CAF Champions League twice.
7. Pyramids FC – 5 million followers
Pyramids FC ranks seventh despite being one of the newer clubs on the list.
The Egyptian side has around 5 million social-media followers and has quickly established itself as a major force in Egyptian football.
Tunisian powerhouse Espérance Sportive de Tunis ranks ninth with approximately two million followers.
The club’s online following may be smaller than some of its rivals, but its record speaks for itself.
Espérance has won numerous domestic titles and four CAF Champions League crowns.
10. Club Africain – 2.8 million followers
Completing the list is Tunisia’s Club Africain with around 2.8 million followers.
Founded in 1920, the club has a century-long history and remains one of Tunisia’s most prominent football institutions.
The figures show the enormous digital reach of Africa’s biggest football clubs. Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek stand well ahead of the rest, while Raja Casablanca, Simba SC and South Africa’s traditional Soweto giants also command millions of followers.
It is important to note that social-media followers do not represent a club’s entire fan base.
Supporters who do not use social media, attend matches or follow clubs through traditional media are not captured by these figures.
The ranking should therefore be viewed as a measure of the clubs’ available digital following in 2026, rather than a definitive count of their total supporters.
