Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly agreed to sell Thapelo Maseko to Danish giants FC Copenhagen.
The 22-year-old winger has fallen out of favour at Masandawana but revived his career during a loan spell at AEL Limassol last season.
His impressive form in Cyprus also saw him earn a recall to the Bafana Bafana squad, where he featured in several matches during the FIFA World Cup.
One of his most memorable moments came when he scored against South Korea in Bafana’s 1-0 victory, helping the team reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Following the tournament, Maseko was linked with several clubs, including teams in Europe and North Africa. However, it was reported that Sundowns were reluctant to sell the Bafana Bafana international to any of their domestic rivals.
On Wednesday, iDiski Times reported that Sundowns had agreed to sell Maseko to Copenhagen for a fee of R28 million.
Maseko would become the latest South African to join the Danish club. Sibusiso Zuma previously played for Copenhagen in the early 2000s and went on to become a club legend.
Maseko joined Sundowns from SuperSport United but struggled for regular game time at Chloorkop and was eventually loaned out last season. Injuries also played a role in limiting the speedy winger’s opportunities with the Brazilians.
Now, after reviving his career at AEL Limassol, Maseko appears set for a new chapter in Europe with Copenhagen after a €1.5 million agreement with the Premier League Giants.
