The Soweto giants enter the clash with history firmly in their sights as they chase a record-breaking fifth consecutive MTN8 title. Orlando Pirates began their remarkable run in 2022, defeating AmaZulu 1-0 in the final. Monnapule Saleng scored the decisive goal to secure the Buccaneers’ first trophy under former coach Jose Riveiro.
They successfully defended their crown in 2023, overcoming Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties after a goalless final. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine proved to be the difference, producing three crucial saves in the shootout.
Orlando Pirates continued their dominance in 2024, defeating Stellenbosch FC 3-1 in the final to become the first club in the PSL era to win the MTN8 three seasons in succession.
The Buccaneers extended that remarkable record last season under Abdeslam Ouaddou. They defeated Stellenbosch FC 3-0 after extra time, with Tshepang Moremi scoring twice as Pirates secured their fourth consecutive crown and 14th MTN8 title overall.
DURBAN CITY EYE UPSET
Durban City head to Soweto determined to prevent another chapter being added to Pirates’ remarkable cup history. The Nedbank Cup holders have strengthened their squad under new coach Khalil Ben Youssef. They will believe they have enough quality to challenge the defending champions.
The Citizens also know they can frustrate the Buccaneers. They held Orlando Pirates to a goalless Betway Premiership draw when the sides last met.
Victory on Saturday would take Orlando Pirates one step closer to an unprecedented fifth straight MTN8 crown, while Durban City will be targeting a major quarter-final upset at the Orlando Amstel Arena.
