South African winger Antonio van Wyk has revealed why he returned from Europe to join Mamelodi Sundowns.
Van Wyk only spent two seasons in Austria after being signed by SV Ried from Stellenbosch FC in 2024.
And while the majority of South African players wish to ply their trade in Europe, Van Wyk he had to choose between staying abroad and returning home.
When that time arrived and he chose to return home, he knew he would only join the African champions.
Speaking on the Sundowns Pitchside Podcast, the 24-year-old said he wanted to win trophies, and joining the Brazilians guarantees him that.

“I would say the history of the club, trophies as well. It’s guaranteed that this team will win a trophy or two every season,” said Van Wyk.
“Obviously that’s a big aspect, as a player you obviously wanna be a decorated player in terms of trophies and numbers as well.
“So, I thought to help my game, I’m going to have to take the next step, and if it’s not in Europe, it should be the African champions.”
WHAT ARE HIS NUMBERS?
Van Wyk made 53 matches for SV Ried during his two-year stint with them, scored four goals and provided seven assists.
At Stellies, the speedy winger featured 78 times, scored six goals and provided 11 assists.
