Bafana Bafana: How much they could earn at 2026 FIFA World Cup
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Bafana Bafana players are set to make millions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

This marks the first time in 24 years that Bafana have earned their place at football’s greatest showpiece.

While South Africa did host the tournament in 2010, the national team did not need to qualify for that edition.

This is the first squad to have qualified since the 2002 side captained by the legendary Lucas Radebe.

Financially, they could not have chosen a better time to return.

HOW MUCH BAFANA BAFANA WILL EARN AT FIFA WORLD CUP

The FIFA Council has approved a staggering $727 million prize pool for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This is more than 50% higher than the total prize money awarded at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Each of the 48 nations that have qualified will receive a minimum of $10.5 million. That’s made up of $1.5 million in preparation fees from FIFA and $9 million for participation.

Therefore, Bafana Bafana are assured of at least $10.5 million. This equates to over R169 million at the time of publication.

However, it does not stop there with millions more potentially up for grabs for South Africa’s players.

MORE MONEY UP FOR GRABS

Here is the official prize breakdown for the 2026 FIFA World Cup:

  • Champions: $50 million
  • Runners-up: $33 million
  • Third place: $29 million
  • Fourth place: $27 million
  • 5th-8th place: $19 million
  • 9th-16th place: $15 million
  • 17th-32nd place: $11 million
  • 33rd-48th place: $9 million

Therefore, beyond the guaranteed $10.5 million, Bafana Bafana stand to earn significantly more depending on their performance.

For example, if South Africa reach the Round of 32, they would receive an additional $11 million (R177 million).

This is a realistic target, as the top two teams from each group – along with the eight best third-placed teams – will advance to the knockout stages.

SOUTH AFRICA HANDED ‘FAVOURABLE’ DRAW

Bafana Bafana were handed a relatively favourable draw, avoiding any of the top-seeded European and South American giants.

South Africa has been drawn in Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico and South Korea. The fourth team in the group is still to be determined, with those final qualification matches scheduled for March.

The stage is set. The financial rewards are immense.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and all other stars striving to be in coach Hugo Broos’ final 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, their is no lack of added incentive.
