Bafana Bafana have learned the identity of their Group A opponents for FIFA World Cup 2026: Mexico, Czech Republic and South Korea.

The Czech Republic secured their spot after a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout win over Denmark, following a 2-2 draw after extra-time on Tuesday evening.

Historic return

This tournament marks a historic return for South Africa, who last appeared on the World Cup stage in 2010 as hosts.

After topping their qualifying group, coach Hugo Broos’ squad will be competing at the global event for the first time in 16 years.

Bafana Bafana’s build-up to the World Cup has been inconsistent.

They reached the last 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and played two international friendlies against Panama in March, recording a 1-1 draw in Durban and a 2-1 loss in Cape Town.

Coach Broos has highlighted finishing and team cohesion as areas of focus ahead of the tournament.

Group Stage Challenges

South Africa will kick off their campaign against co-hosts Mexico on Thursday, 11 June, with the CONCACAF side ranked 15th in the world, making them a tough opening fixture.

Their second match will be against Czech Republic, ranked 41st, offering Bafana Bafana a realistic opportunity to claim points.

The group stage concludes with a clash against South Korea, a disciplined and tactically organised team that will test South Africa’s defensive and attacking strategies.

South Korea are ranked 25th in the latest FIFA rankings, while South Africa are in 60th spot.

Road to the Knockouts

To advance from Group A, Bafana Bafana will likely need at least one victory and a draw. Achieving that will require focused, spirited performances across all three matches.

While the road is challenging, South Africa’s return to the World Cup offers a chance to reignite national pride and make a statement on the world stage.

As a reminder, the top two sides in each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-ranked sides will progress to the Round of 32 at a World Cup which will feature 48 teams for the first time ever.

The tournament will feature a record 10 countries from Africa.
