Africa will have record representation at FIFA World Cup 2026 with 10 teams from the continent set to participate in the expanded tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 2026 edition will feature 48 teams for the first time, allowing nine African nations to qualify directly, with one additional team advancing through the intercontinental playoffs.

Bet With The Best. World Sports Betting

This marks the largest number of African teams ever to compete at a World Cup, highlighting the growing strength and global influence of football across the continent.

Africa’s Representatives at FIFA World Cup 2026

The following teams will represent Africa on the global stage + FIFA ranking:

  • Morocco – 8th
  • Senegal – 14th
  • Algeria – 28th
  • Egypt – 29th
  • Côte d’Ivoire – 34th
  • Tunisia – 44th
  • DR Congo – 46th
  • South Africa – 60th
  • Cape Verde – 69th
  • Ghana – 74th

Nine of these nations secured qualification by winning their CAF qualifying groups, while DR Congo earned the final spot through the intercontinental playoff tournament.

Several milestones were achieved during the qualification campaign.

Cape Verde made history by qualifying for the World Cup for the first time, a remarkable achievement for the small island nation with a population of just over 500 000 people.

Meanwhile, South Africa ended a 16-year absence from the tournament after finishing top of their qualifying group.

African heavyweights such as Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt also secured their places comfortably, continuing their consistent presence at the world’s biggest football event.

Africa’s Growing Ambition

The expanded format offers African teams a greater opportunity to make a deep run in the competition.

The continent has been steadily building momentum on the global stage, highlighted by Morocco’s historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup, the best performance by an African nation in the tournament’s history.

With a record number of teams now competing, expectations are high that one or more African sides could challenge for the latter stages of the tournament.

A New Era for the World Cup

FIFA World Cup 2026, scheduled from 11 June to 19 July, will be the first to feature 48 teams and 12 groups, significantly expanding global participation.

For Africa, the tournament represents a new era of opportunity, with 10 teams aiming not only to represent the continent proudly but also to push further than ever before on football’s biggest stage.
