Chiefs’ Maboe admits he didn’t deserve Man of the Match

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe has responded calmly to the debate around his Man of the Match award following the goalless draw against Polokwane City.

The game at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium ended without goals, but the post-match conversation quickly shifted away from the result and onto the individual award.

Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe had questioned the decision, insisting his side had done enough to control key areas, especially midfield.

POLOKWANE CITY COACH STOOD BY HIS VIEW

Mohafe had been clear after the match, saying his team had done well to limit Kaizer Chiefs’ in midfield. He pointed directly at Maboe’s performance when questioning how the award was decided.

“And in the middle, we neutralised Maboe, we neutralized Cele,” said Mohafe.

“And I’m so confused how Maboe got the Man of the Match. He was nowhere to be seen. Whenever he got the ball, we were there, we won most of the balls from him. So how can you be Man of the Match losing the balls?”

Now, Maboe himself has weighed in. Instead of pushing back, Maboe took a different route.

The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder admitted the performance was not among his best and understood where the criticism was coming from.

“I also agree with the Coach of Polokwane about the Man of the Match. I don’t think it was my best game. It was also difficult to play at the Old Peter Mokaba stadium. But I certainly didn’t take it as criticism or personal. I think it was a fair point,” the Kaizer Chiefs midfield maestro added.
