Four Kaizer Chiefs midfield signings

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to continue strengthening their midfield ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with control, discipline and defensive stability still major priorities in the Betway Premiership.

This is the four and final profile in a series looking at midfielders who could bring balance and reliability to Amakhosi.

After profiling Grant Margeman of Siwelele FC, Golden Arrows midfield maestro Isaac Cisse, and Marumo Gallants’ Ibrahim Bance, let’s talk Kyle Jurgens at Durban City.

The 22-year-old midfielder is not a player only known for his tactical discipline and technical quality. But his strong character, personality and confidence standout. These are traits that are just as important at a big club like Amakhosi.

KAIZER CHIEFS MIDFIELD TARGET: FROM OCEAN VIEW TO PREMIERSHIP RELIABILITY

Hailing from the tough streets of Ocean View in Cape Town and a graduate of the highly-regarded Ubuntu Football Academy, Jurgens quickly built his reputation as one of Durban City FC’s most dependable midfielders this season.

His game is defined by intelligence, grit and excellent reading and understanding of football. Jurgens crucially plays as a box to box midfielder rather than just a ball-winner.

A demand for the physical and speedy nature of the Betway Premiership. He was first introduced to us when he made his first senior start for Stellenbosch FC against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Jurgens was unfazed, playing as a makeshift right-back on that occasion, he showed maturity beyond his years and was unlucky to miss the Man of the Match award.

THE ANCHOR WHO SETS THE TONE

Jurgens’ defensive awareness in central midfield has also allowed him to contribute going forward on occasion, including two assists this season.

Kaizer Chiefs’ current options in holding midfield include Lebohng Maboe and Sibongiseni Mthethwa who’s contract ends on 30 June.

His defensive influence is clear in his team-leading 44 tackles and 31 interceptions. But what stands out more is his timing. He rarely overcommits, instead trusting positioning and anticipation to win possession and reset attacks.

THE “HOND” FACTOR AND KAIZER CHIEFS MIDFIELD FLEXIBILITY

Jurgens has often been described as having a “hond” in him for his nonstop hunger to compete for every ball. He presses aggressively, covers ground constantly, and brings edge to duels, but remains tactically disciplined.

That intensity is now matched by greater composure in possession, and intelligent decision making in choosing passes or taking shots.

Should Kaizer Chiefs make a move, they will face competition from Stellenbosch FC. Head coach Gavin Hunt is reportedly calling Jurgens to return from loan next season.
