Will Orlando Pirates’ skipper get his place back in the side?

Orlando Pirates are hitting top gear at a crucial juncture of the season, meaning that there’s stiff competition for places.

20-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi has stepped up to the plate in a big way.

The talented central defender is now one of the first names on the team sheet.

Orlando Pirates fringe star finally gets approval from the boss

How will Sibisi get his place back in the Orlando Pirates side?

Pirates have kept clean sheets in each of their last six matches across all competitions, including four in the league. Mbekezeli Mbokazi has worn the captain’s armband in regular skipper Nkosinathi Sibisi’s recent absence, and retained his place and the captaincy now that Sibisi is fit and back in the squad. It’s a massive vote of confidence for a man who only turned 20 in September. New signing Lebone Seema, still 22, has formed a fruitful partnership with Mbokazi in the heart of defence, meaning senior operators Sibisi and Olisa Ndah will face a fight to win their spots back. There’s also the prospect of a return for the outstanding Thabiso Sesane after along injury layoff.

Mbokazi tipped for the top

Where is Thabiso Sesane?

Thabiso Sesane started the 2024-2025 campaign in domineering form, becoming a pillar in the heart of their defence. It was, therefore, a massive blow to the club and player when he was cruelly struck down with a serious tendon injury in February. The rupture was deemed bad enough for the 25-year-old to undergo surgery. Full recovery could take anywhere between four and six months. If Sesane’s rehabilitation continues going smoothly, he could be back in training after the international break and eyeing a return in October.
