Tshegofatso Mabasa to hunt Kaizer Chiefs

Posted on January 22, 2026

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa could be back and get his revenge against Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup.

The 29-year-old joined Stellenbosch FC on loan until the end of the season from the Buccaneers.

He scored on his debut for the Cape Winelands side to give Gavin Hunt’s side a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United on Tuesday evening.

Mabasa has struggled for gametime under new Pirates coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, only managing just nine appearances across all competitions. He has, however, scored four goals in the first half of the season before he was loaned out.

Mabasa and Gavin Hunt to haunt Kaizer Chiefs?

At Stellies, the Sniper is expected to play more games, allowing him to make his case for Bafana Bafana ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

A good showing at Stellebosch FC will see him not only return to the national setup but also rejoin Orlando Pirates.

Next month, Mabasa will face Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup last 32. Last year, he was on the losing side as Amakhosi edged out the Buccaneers 2-1 in the final to win their first trophy in 10 years.

The forward has also been linked with a move to Naturena during the transfer period before he joined Stellies.

His coach, Gavin Hunt, also has a point to prove against the current Nedbank Cup champions. He coached Amakhosi back in 2020/21 but was dismissed before the end of the season despite taking the team to the CAF Champions League semi-final.

If Kaizer Chiefs are to defend the Nedbank Cup, they will have Mabasa and Gavin Hunt to battle with. Amakhosi turn their attention to the CAF Confederation Cup after defeating Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0 midweek in a Betway Premiership clash played at the FNB Stadium.

Can Chiefs retain the Nedbank Cup?
