Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler has criticized Betway Premiership players, stating that they should change their mentality when facing lower division teams.
Babina Noko secured a spot in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final following a narrow 1-0 win over Motsepe Foundation Championship side Pretoria University. In the previous round, United eliminated Highbury FC in the Last 32, beating them 1-0 as well.
In both games, Tinkler was left furious, stating that there should be a huge difference between players playing in the Betway Premiership and lower league teams.
“It’s a mindset. I can’t change it. Players have to change it. It’s a mindset,” he stated.
“I played in the Serie A and we played a Serie C team. It’s guaranteed 10-0. Oh, it’s guaranteed 10-0. And that’s my small club that I’m playing for.
“But then you got AC Milan, etc., they hit them 15. They were quite a few years back. Someone got hit 14, or whatever it was, Sundowns. That’s the right mentality.
“That’s what should happen when you’re playing lower league teams. You’re a PSL player for a reason.
“Now you come here and every single one of those Tuks players wishes to be in your seat, in your position.
“So you’ve got to go out there and show them why you’re there, why you’re playing in the PSL, and why they’re not playing in the PSL.
“That’s a player mindset. It can’t come from the coach. It doesn’t come from the coach.”
