Sundowns fans react to cup exit

Posted on October 5, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns supporters want to club to part ways with head coach Miguel Cardoso following their Carling Knockout Cup exit.

The Brazilians suffered a 7-6 defeat against Marumo Gallants on penalties at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night. This is the second cup competition that Masandawana has failed to win this season, having lost in the semi-finals of the MTN8.

Speaking after the Carling Cup defeat, Cardoso felt Sundowns were the better team and were just unlucky not to have found a goal.

“I think this is one game we controlled from the first minute until the 90th minute, and the entire extra-time,” he said as per FARPost.

“Around the 50th minute, we played with one player less [Miguel Reisinho red carded], we were totally in control of the match. We took the responsibility of winning the match from the very beginning, finding the right plan to adjust and understand what’s happening on the pitch.”

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso feeling the heat

The Portuguese coach refused to give Gallants credit, saying the team defended for the entire match.

“And the other team found a bonus in penalties; they just defended and opposed our attacks. I think compared to the game we played against Marumo [in the league], it was completely different,” Cardoso added.

Sundowns fans blamed Cardoso for their team’s early exit from the Carling Cup.

@ChrisSentsomedi wrote: “Many of us will be relieved to see Cardoso go, which is inevitable. However, with Flemming Berg remaining, we wouldn’t have solved even half of our problems at Sundowns.”

@VhoGubz wrote: “Cardoso already fumbled MTN8, Carling Cup, Nedbank Cup and CAFCL. Coach Manqoba and Rulani were fired for the same things. We are just asking for consistency from Flemming Berg.”

“Mamelodi Sundowns FC is going nowhere with Miguel Cardoso,” @Madumetja__M08.

Should Downs release their coach?
