Steve Komphela’s exit exposes new cracks at Mamelodi Sundowns

Posted on July 4, 2023

Ever since Rhulani Mokwena took over as the sole head coach of Amasandawana, there have been growing rumours of possible bad blood between the trio.

It had been alleged that Rhulani Mokwena’s contract talks had hit a stalemate, after the young coach demanded his own technical stuff and the axing of both his colleagues. Which is why it came as no surprise that coach Steve Komphela penned down a one year deal with an option to extend with a further year at the Dube birds, Moroka swallows; shortly after Rhulani signed a deal keeping him at Mamelodi Sundowns for a further 4 years.

Shortly after Steve Komphela’s exit, a lot of Mamelodi Sundowns took to social media platform and lambasted the Mamelodi Sundowns management for making a mistake “that might go on to get Rhulani sacked”:

“Sadly, I fear that Rhulani may have lost the dressing room. Many people do not realise this but Steve Komphela was very important behind the scenes. He was also keeping the players who aren’t playing in check. Players like Miso and Jali always mentioned the role that Steve Komphela played, and the mentality that he instilled in them” said one concerned fan.

According to many fans, Steve Komphela is the unsung hero at Mamelodi Sundowns but does not get the credit he deserves as he was not in the spotlight.

The upcoming season will be a make or break for coach Rhulani Mokwena’s career. Though he led the team to the DSTV premier league title as well as going undefeated in the CAF competition, a lot of people are still not convinced. The popular opinion seems to be that he claimed credit for Mandla’s hard work. His performance at Orlando Pirates and Chippa United leaves a lot to be desired. Will he sink or swim?

Sadly, I fear that Rhulani may have lost the dressing room. SK was also keeping the players who aren't playing in check.
