Stellenbosch FC booked their spot in the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinals after beating Kaizer Chiefs 5-4 on penalties at DHL Stadium on Sunday.
It was the second meeting of the season between Stellies and Chiefs, with Chiefs having triumphed 2-0 at Athlone Stadium in their league encounter in August.
The game kicked off 30 minutes later than expected, with supporters still making their way into the stadium at the anticipated start. It was a cagey start to the game, with the first chance at goal for either side only coming in the 12th minute, though Khomotjo Lekoloane was unable to get his effort on target.
Khanyisa Mayo had a chance at the other end three minutes later, but his attempt from just outside the area struck the woodwork and went wide. In the 17th minute, Glody Lilepo’s shot from an acute angle was pushed behind by Oscarine Masuluke in the Stellies goal.
An ambitious attempt from Dillan Solomons in the 29th minute went just wide of goal, while Genino Palace’s 35th-minute attempt was straight at Fiacre Ntwari.
Just before the break, Lilepo’s free kick was saved by Masuluke, and when the whistle for half-time blew, the scoreline remained goalless.
Mayo’s attempt in the 53rd minute was saved by Masuluke. The Stellies goalkeeper was unable to see out the game, and just past the hour mark, was replaced by Sage Stephens.
Thabo Cele was off target in the 70th minute, as the second half saw few chances, and the contest looked to be heading to extra time.
Devin Titus and Mduduzi Shabalala had late chances at either end, but both were off target and at the end of ninety minutes, the score remained goalless.
Extra-time did also not produce any goals as the tie went to penalties with Stellies winning on the spot kicks.
