Richards Bay hand Kaizer Chiefs third straight defeat

The loss marked Kaizer Chiefs’ third consecutive defeat after the 2-1 loss to Stellenbosch and the 3-0 beating at the hands of Orlando Pirates.

Tonight’s loss to Richards Bay leaves Amakhosi in fifth place with 30 points.

BETWAY PREMIERSHIP: RICHARDS BAY 1-0 KAIZER CHIEFS

Richards Bay, who have earned their first win in seven matches in all competitions, have moved up to ninth place.

Amakhosi began the match with clear attacking intent, pushing forward early and looking eager to control proceedings.

The opening 10 minutes were lively, with Kaizer Chiefs attempting to impose themselves through quick combinations, but Richards Bay responded confidently as the game quickly opened into an end-to-end contest.

Both sides found space in transition, creating a fast tempo that prevented either defence from settling. Despite the energy, clear chances remained limited until the 23rd minute when Richards Bay nearly broke the deadlock.

Lundi Mahala found himself in a promising position inside the area but rushed his effort, sending his shot wide in what proved to be the best opportunity of the opening stages.

As the half progressed, Kaizer Chiefs gradually gained territorial control and began creating more meaningful moments in attack.

Their best chance arrived just before the break in the 45th minute. Gaston Sirino delivered a beautifully weighted free kick into the box, but Aden McCarthy’s header drifted narrowly wide with the goalkeeper beaten.

Moments later, Kaizer Chiefs threatened again when Ethan Chislett delivered a dangerous cross toward Sirino, whose header from a tight angle lacked power and failed to trouble the Richards Bay goalkeeper.

Despite promising attacking phases from both teams, the sides went into halftime locked at 0-0.

RICHARDS BAY TAKE CONTROL

The second half resumed with similar intensity, but clear chances remained scarce as both teams struggled to find rhythm in the final third.

Amakhosi enjoyed spells of possession between the 45th and 60th minutes, yet Richards Bay remained compact and patient.

The decisive moment arrived in the 69th minute. A long diagonal ball from Sanele Barnes found Gumede inside the penalty area. The forward showed composure under pressure, turning past two Kaizer Chiefs defenders before calmly slotting the ball home to give the Natal Rich Boys the lead.

Chasing the game, Kaier Chiefs pushed numbers forward in the closing stages, but Richards Bay looked increasingly dangerous on the counterattack. Between the 80th and 90th minutes, the hosts finished stronger and could have extended their advantage, missing three clear chances as spaces opened up late on.

In the end, Richards Bay’s organisation proved enough to secure all three points.
