Rayners: Sundowns Using Chiefs Defeat as Fuel for Improvement

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has acknowledged the team’s disappointment following their surprise 2-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs but insists the squad is already shifting focus to their next challenge.

The defeat at FNB Stadium over the weekend ended Sundowns’ strong run in the DStv Premiership, serving as a rare stumble for the defending champions. However, Rayners stressed that the team remains determined to learn from the setback.

“Naturally, we were disappointed with the result,” the forward admitted. “But in football, you have to move on quickly. We’re not dwelling on it—we’re already looking ahead and working to correct our mistakes.”

Head coach Rhulani Mokwena reinforced Rayners’ stance, framing the loss as a learning opportunity rather than a crisis. “Every match teaches us something,” Mokwena said. “We’ll analyze our performance, make the necessary adjustments, and come back stronger.”

The defeat has sparked debate over whether Sundowns, despite their dominance in recent years, still have room to grow in terms of mental resilience and adaptability. However, given their track record of bouncing back from setbacks, many expect a swift response from the Brazilians.

With a star-studded squad and a history of success, Sundowns will aim to prove that this loss was merely a temporary stumble rather than a sign of decline. Their next match will be a crucial test of their ability to regroup and reassert their authority in South African football.

“This team doesn’t stay down for long,” Rayners added. “We’ll use this as motivation.”

As the league season progresses, all eyes will be on how Sundowns respond—and whether they can maintain their grip at the top of the Premiership table.
