Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Ernest Mtawali believes Pirates can win the MTN8 for a fourth time in a row because they still have the hunger.
The Buccaneers made history last season winning the opening tournament of the season for a third successive campaign and start the defence of the title against Polokwane City in Orlando on Saturday.
Mtawali spoke to iDiski Times senior writer Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 215 of the newspaper, addressing the psychological effects of winning the cup for a campaign.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they go all the way again,” Mtawali told IDiski Times.
“They like to start the season strong and this tournament gives them the perfect opportunity.”
The side made 11 new signings, including former City man Oswin Appollis, with the former Malawi international saying the 23-year-old’s star will shine even brighter at Pirates.
“You can see they’ve built something special, especially with their youth development and recruitment,” added Mtawali.
“I know that most people believe that one player does not make a difference but Pirates have signed the star man [Oswin] Appollis.
“He’s a very good addition, an experienced international player who stood out while playing for a team like Polokwane City and now he will want to show why Pirates signed him.”
