Orlando Pirates: 90 minutes from title glory
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

For Orlando Pirates, this coming weekend will present one of the most defining moments in the club’s history.

After years of near misses, managerial changes and rebuilding phases, the Buccaneers head into their final 2025/26 Betway Premiership fixture knowing that a first league title since the 2011/12 season remains within reach – but only if they deliver when it matters most.

Following a frustrating goalless draw against Durban City last Saturday, Orlando Pirates squandered an opportunity to take control of the title race.

Instead, the Soweto giants now enter a high-pressure showdown against Orbit College with no margin for error.

A Season Defined by One Match

For supporters, players and coaching staff, the equation could not be clearer: win and claim the title.

Anything less will hand the title to rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, who are chasing a ninth consecutive league crown.

The stakes extend far beyond three points.

Orlando Pirates have spent more than a decade chasing a league championship that has repeatedly slipped from their grasp.

Since their last title-winning campaign under former coach Roger de Sa, the Buccaneers have watched Mamelodi Sundowns dominate South African football while cup successes have offered only partial consolation.

Now, an opportunity exists to finally rewrite the narrative.

More Than Just a League Match

While some may hesitate to call it the biggest game in the club’s history, there is little doubt it ranks among the most important in the PSL era.

Victory could end a 14-year title drought and cement this group of players as the team that restored Orlando Pirates to domestic supremacy.

Defeat – or even a draw – will no doubt trigger painful questions about missed opportunities, especially after costly dropped points against Durban City, Richards Bay and Siwelele FC earlier in the campaign.

Football often remembers the moments where championships are won or lost, and Orlando Pirates know this weekend could define how their season is remembered for years to come.

History and Pressure Collide

The Buccaneers are no strangers to high-stakes football.

Historic milestones such as the club’s 1995 African triumph and memorable Soweto derby cup finals remain deeply embedded in Orlando Pirates folklore.

Yet for a generation of younger supporters who have never celebrated a league title, this weekend carries enormous emotional weight.

It is not just another fixture.

It is potentially the match that decides whether Orlando Pirates finally reclaim their place at the summit of South African football – or whether the wait continues.

Kick-off between Orbit College and Orlando Pirates at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday, 23 May is at 15:00.

Orbit College are 15th in the standings and fighting relegation.

They have lost 17 out of 29 matches this season – with Orlando Pirates desperate to make that 18 defeats …
