Kaizer Chiefs supporters may be looking at a potential new Itumeleng Khune emerging out of the Naturena academy.
The 18-year-old from Ha-Rabal, Limpopo, was seen training with the senior team at the Moses Mabhida Stadium a day before facing ZESCO United in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The 2024/25 Diski Challenge Goalkeeper of the Season also recently returned to a hero’s welcome in his home village after winning the 2025 U20 AFCON title.
TAKALANI MAZHAMBA JOURNEY TO KAIZER CHIEFS FIRST TEAM
Mazhamba began in the Vhembe District of Limpopo, where his ability as a goalkeeper earned him a place in the Kaizer Chiefs development system.
He rose to wider attention during the 2024/25 DStv Diski Challenge season, playing a key role as the Amakhosi reserves claimed the league title.
Upon his return from the U20 World Cup in Chile in October, he was formally integrated into the Kaizer Chiefs first-team environment for the 2025/26 season, working closely with senior goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
RICH GOALKEEPING LINAGE
Mazhamba’s progress follows a familiar pathway within Kaizer Chiefs’ development system, which has produced several notable goalkeepers over the years.
The most prominent is Itumeleng Khune, who joined the club at the age of 12, initially as a striker, before converting to a goalkeeper and going on to earn 91 caps for South Africa.
The academy also produced Brilliant Khuzwayo, who worked his way through the ranks to become a regular first-team option, as well as Bruce Bvuma, a more recent graduate who remains part of the senior squad in 2026.
Another product of the system is Thela Ngobeni, who came through the 1989 age group and built a professional career.
In addition to these homegrown players, Kaizer Chiefs have also made use of goalkeepers signed from outside the academy, including the incredible talents of Rowen Fernandes, Emile Baron, Arthur Baartman and Reyaad Pieterse.
