Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has tipped Mbekezeli Mbokazi to succeed at Chicago Fire.
The 20-year-old recently joined the American side after less than a year at Orlando Pirates. Since making his professional debut, the defender known as “TLB” has helped his side win two trophies this season and also played a huge role in Bafana Bafana qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His move to Chicago Fire shocked many, including Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos. The Belgian mentor felt the young defender needed to finish this season before securing a move to Europe.
Khanye, on the other hand, said a move to the US was a financial gain for Mbokazi.
“The boy’s background is going to push him to last longer, even as an international,” he said on iDiski TV.
“And this move is more of a stepping stone for him. I don’t know why we underestimate the American league, I really don’t know why. Some of the best leagues in the world do not even look at our league.”
Mbokazi to secure big bag in America
The former Chiefs star said Mbokazi will gain more exposure in America and will also make more money for himself while competing at a top level.
“This is a decent move and look at the money they signed him for. He is now going to be exposed and the money tells you there is something the team has seen.
“I don’t want to be negative about that move because it’s a good move,” Khanye added.
Mbokazi played his last match for Pirates earlier this month, helping them to the Carling Knockout Cup triumph. He will move to the US after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off in the next few days.
