Asante Kotoko secured the second edition of the Toyota Cup with a 3-2 win on penalties in sudden-death over Kaizer Chiefs after the finished 0-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Chiefs started the brighter of the two sides but the game was stop start with several fouls as both sides showed a rather aggressive approach in their pre-season outing.
While Amakhosi showed positive signs of progression since last season, the poor state of the field negated any sort of fluency in passing with the likes of Thabo Cele, Mshini Ngcobo and aiming to join in on the front-three of Flavio Silva, Glody Lilepo and Mfundo Vilakazi.
Inacio Miguel had the best chance of either side to find the winner when Chiefs were awarded a penalty after 83 minutes, but the Angola international – their regular penalty-taker, missed, sliding the ball past the left side of Mohamed Camara’s post.
The game then went to penalties, as the curtain raiser did earlier in the day and Kotoko went on to win 3-2 in sudden death.
