Newcomers Durban City held Orlando Pirates in a six-goal thriller, while Richards Bay overcome rivals Lamontville Golden Arrows in the opening fixtures of the DStv Diski Challenge.
Pirates opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Samkelo Zikalala but just two minutes later Lindokuhle Ncoco equalised for the Daine Klate’s side. Ncoco completed his brace in the 23rd minute, and just before half-time even a hat trick via a penalty which seemed to be nail in the coffin for Buccaneers.
But new Pirates’ DDC coach Roscoe Krieling had to make his side dig deep in the second half. The Buccaneers pulled one back after Odwa Nyulu committed a foul and received his second yellow, with Moses Mphekgoane stepping up to make it 3-2.
Klate made few changes to see out the game, but coming from the bench Derbyshire made it 3-3 to secure a point away from home for Pirates.
Earlier in the KZN derby, Richards Bay came out top, beating Golden Arrows by 3-1. Bay scored all three goals inside the first 30 minutes of the game. Arrows pulled one back in 69th minute but when they thought they could find a way back, they were reduced to 10-man.
