Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has insisted Bafana needed VAR today because Nigeria’s equaliser should’ve been ruled out.
Bafana opened the scoring in the 24th minute via an own goal from William Troost-Ekong, while Nigeria equalised via Calvin Bassey just before the break.
However, camera replays clearly showed the ball hit the arm Super Eagles’ star before it hit the back of the net, with Khune saying the referee should’ve done better, but also criticising Siyabonga Ngezana’s role.
“We’ve been talking about VAR coming to South Africa, this is where we needed it the most,” he said on SABC2.
“I don’t know how the referee missed that, he was in a good position to see. If he didn’t see it, his linesman could’ve seen it, because when you look at Bassey, he jumped more than anyone else.
“It clearly shows he didn’t use his head, he used his hand and South Africa was hard done [by].
“But again Siya Ngezana with his height, you can’t be in the box and go down. He should’ve risen above the rest, even the goalkeeper because the goalkeeper is coming from the near post trying to cover.
“But you expect your defender to help you in this kind of situation.”
