Kaizer Chiefs given hope in chase for Bafana superstar?

Betway Premiership co-leaders Kaizer Chiefs might not be done with their transfer business yet, as the window only closes on 22 September.

Algerian side Belouizdad have chosen not to register Khanyisa Mayo for the current 2025-2026 season.

Chiefs came close to signing the Umtata-born striker last season.

Ramovic has no plans for Mayo

Former TS Galaxy boss and current Belouizdad manager Sead Ramovic has decided against registering 27-year-old Khanyisa Mayo for the 2025-2026 campaign. In his debut season there, Mayo made 41 appearances across all competitions, scoring six times. Mayo’s last Bafana Bafana outing was a thrilling 3-3 draw against Algeria in a friendly in 2024.

“It was my decision, and it was not an easy one,” Ramovic told iDiski Times.

“Mayo is a true professional, and I have the utmost respect for him. But in football, it’s about timing, the right role for the player, and the overall strategy of the team.

“At this stage, I believe a new challenge would be the best opportunity for him to continue playing at the highest level.

“I truly wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”

Latest Chiefs transfer rumours

How close did Kaizer Chiefs come to signing Mayo?

“Before his move to Belouizdad, Mayo was close to joining Chiefs. His agent, Basia Michaels, confirmed at the time that Amakhosi were moments away from signing him,” a Citizen report read.

“Michaels also revealed that Mayo was keen to join Chiefs, the club that his father, Patrick Mayo, played for during his playing career.”

Kaizer Chiefs gear up for Sekhukhune test

Let’s not forget the club’s 55 trophies in their storied history, including 13 league crowns. They’re also, by far and away, the most followed club in the land. Next up is a top-of-the-table clash with Sekhukhune, who boast an identical record to Chiefs so far this season: 12 points from five matches and zero defeats. Chiefs vs Sekhukhune kicks off on Tuesday, 16 September at 19:30.

Should Chiefs make another approach for Mayo in September?
