Jose Riveiro reveals what’s next in his career

Posted on November 25, 2025

Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has lifted the lid on his next career steps, revealing that he is currently studying and weighing up his options as he prepares for his next coaching chapter.

The Spaniard said he is in no rush and wants to choose a project that fits his ambitions.

HOW JOSE RIVEIRO BECAME A LEGEND AT ORLANDO PIRATES

The quietly spoken tactician has been in town for the Carling Knockout promotional campaign ahead of the final in December.

The coach, fondly known as El Padre in these parts, left a heavy mark on South African football. During his tenure at Pirates, he collected silverware at an astonishing rate, three MTN8 titles, two Nedbank Cups, and three consecutive league runners-up finishes behind Mamelodi Sundowns. His trophy return made him one of the PSL’s most consistent modern-day coaches.

After leaving Soweto in May, Jose Riveiro took on one of the continent’s toughest jobs when he joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly. But his stay in Cairo was short-lived. A poor run of results left the defending champions sitting 12th on the log, and the club parted ways with him in September, describing the exit as a “mutual decision” aimed at realigning ambitions.

A 2–0 defeat to CAF Champions League holders Pyramids FC proved to be his final match in charge, ending a seven-game stretch that produced just one win.

FUTURE PLANS

Speaking live on News Room Afrika, he was asked what direction he plans to take next. Jose Riveiro said he is being intentional about the decision.

“Hopefully the right one,” he said. “I’m taking my time to consider different options, different perspectives and different objectives, but hopefully soon, I’m gonna find the right place. It’s just about timing.”

One thing, however, is already decided. Jose Riveiro made it clear there is no possibility of him coaching another team in the country besides Orlando Pirates.

“Like I already said many times, it was a fantastic period with Orlando Pirates. It’s time to move forward for me and for the club as well. I’m a Buccaneer, I will always be, and that’s why it’s impossible for me to be a coach in another club.

“So the future seems to be somewhere else,” he concluded.
