Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs still have plenty to play for as the 2025/26 season draws to a close.

The Buccaneers and Masandawana are battling it out in the most hotly contested Betway Premiership title race in recent years.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs are on the brink of qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Kaizer Chiefs currently sit third in the latest Betway Premiership standings.

Following their most recent 1-1 draw with defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns – and AmaZulu’s 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows in their KwaZulu-Natal derby – Amakhosi are one step closer to qualifying.

Qualification for this season’s CAF Confederation Cup paid $100 000 (R1.64 million) to teams which were eliminated in the preliminary round.

After the latest round of action, Kaizer Chiefs have maintained their five-point lead over fourth-placed AmaZulu.

Amakhosi sit on 48 points from their 27 matches. Meanwhile, Usuthu have 43 points from the same number of matches.

That means that Amakhosi need five points from their remaining three matches to make mathematically certain of finishing in the coveted third place which would guarantee them a CAF Confederation Cup spot next season.

Two victories – or a win and two draws – will be good enough for Kaizer Chiefs to finish third.

In all likelihood, it won’t even take as many as five points for the Glamour Boys.

R20 MILLION AND THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP TITLE

As reported on The South African, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are battling it out for a staggering R20 million in prize money from the PSL as this season’s champion side.

However, this amount of money does not come close to what it will mean to either side to win the Betway Premiership title.

Both sides are fighting to win South Africa’s biggest local football competition and with this comes the honour, respect, history and prestige of being the PSL champions.

Especially, for the Bucs.

This is because Orlando Pirates have not won the PSL since the 2011/12 season – 14 years ago. Bucs supporters and players alike are no doubt hungry for this trophy in particular.

Meanwhile, don’t get me wrong, it certainly means a lot to Mamelodi Sundowns’ plans and players even if they have won the last eight titles.

In addition, The Brazilians are still chasing the biggest prize in Africa – the CAF Champions League.

They will take on Morocco’s AS FAR in a two-legged final – on 17 and 24 May – with $6 million (R100 million) going to the winner.
