Benni McCarthy has been accused of backstabbing Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, after the South African took a swipe at the club earlier this week.
Benni McCarthy joined Manchester United’s coaching ranks in 2022 as the first team’s attack guru, but his tenure at the club came to an abrupt end two years later in 2024 when he was stood down.
Instead, manager Erik ten Hag replaced McCarthy with fellow Dutchman and club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.
MCCARTHY SLAMS MAN UNITED, TEN HAG HITS BACK
In an interview with Portuguese news outlet ZeroZero this week, Benni McCarthy suggested Ten Hag is a failure because he lacks fire and passion, while also implying a number of Manchester United stars don’t put in enough effort in training and in games.
In responds to Benni McCarthy’s scathing view of him, Ten Hag defended himself and his managerial credentials during an interview with SkySports.
“I’ve proven in my career that always I will win. The last six years I have eight trophies,” the Manchester United boss said.
CLUB AFFILIATE CALLS BENNI MCCARTHY A SNAKE
Mark Goldbridge, one of the world’s most renowned football content creators and avid Manchester United support, did not take kindly to what he labels as McCarthy’s betrayal.
Speaking on his United Stand podcast, the pundit blasted
“I don’t think Benni McCarthy comes across that well, to be honest and I’ll tell you why,” Goldridge starts off.
“Eric ten Hag gave him a job for two years. And I think you’ve been given a job and he got rib of you and now you’ve thrown him under the bus to the world,” Goldridge added.
“I just think that’s snakey and a bit classless. I know he’s probably bitter that he has lost his job and maybe didn’t deserve to lose his job. But, you know, it’s bad when a guy is really struggling to just go and throw him under the bus.
‘But what really disappointed me, was that obviously, when he’s saying that Ten Hag got no passion, he also mentions that players are not working hard, but we don’t get their names and that annoys me.”
